How many veterans are enrolled in VA healthcare (and how much of their benefits are utilized)?

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), about 9 million American veterans are currently enrolled in the VA’s healthcare program. The healthcare program was first introduced in 1865, to service the nation’s former service members by providing adequate medical care and resources. It has become one of the United States’ largest healthcare systems.

To become part of the VA’s healthcare program, also known as the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), and receive its benefits, a veteran must enroll. While there are 9 million of our country’s veterans are already enrolled, almost 16.5 million veterans who may be eligible for services are not enrolled. Many of these veterans may face barriers to enrollment. In an attempt to address these barriers, we’ve researched the topic and developed solutions to increase the number of enrolled veterans.

Another interesting fact about VHA benefits is that many veterans do not access the benefits available to them through the healthcare program.

  • According to the most recent report made available from the VA, only 738,212 out of the 9 million who are currently enrolled have accessed the VA’s healthcare benefits made available to them.
